Animal-Human Hybrids Spark Controversy

Animal-Human Hybrids Spark Controversy
Maryann Mott / National Geographic News

An ancient Etruscan statue of a chimera found in north-central Italy. The
mythic beast had a lion's body, serpent's tail, and goat's head.

Scientists have begun blurring the line between human and animal by
producing chimeras—a hybrid creature that's part human, part animal.

Chinese scientists at the Shanghai Second Medical University in 2003
successfully fused human cells with rabbit eggs. The embryos were reportedly
the first human-animal chimeras successfully created. They were allowed to
develop for several days in a laboratory dish before the scientists
destroyed the embryos to harvest their stem cells.

In Minnesota last year researchers at the Mayo Clinic created pigs with
human blood flowing through their bodies.

And at Stanford University in California an experiment might be done later
this year to create mice with human brains.

Scientists feel that, the more humanlike the animal, the better research
model it makes for testing drugs or possibly growing "spare parts," such as
livers, to transplant into humans.

Watching how human cells mature and interact in a living creature may also
lead to the discoveries of new medical treatments.

But creating human-animal chimeras—named after a monster in Greek mythology
that had a lion's head, goat's body, and serpent's tail—has raised troubling
questions: What new subhuman combination should be produced and for what
purpose? At what point would it be considered human? And what rights, if
any, should it have?

There are currently no U.S. federal laws that address these issues.

Ethical Guidelines

The National Academy of Sciences, which advises the U.S. government, has
been studying the issue. In March it plans to present voluntary ethical
guidelines for researchers.

A chimera is a mixture of two or more species in one body. Not all are
considered troubling, though.

For example, faulty human heart valves are routinely replaced with ones
taken from cows and pigs. The surgery—which makes the recipient a
human-animal chimera—is widely accepted. And for years scientists have added
human genes to bacteria and farm animals.

What's caused the uproar is the mixing of human stem cells with embryonic
animals to create new species.

Biotechnology activist Jeremy Rifkin is opposed to crossing species
boundaries, because he believes animals have the right to exist without
being tampered with or crossed with another species.

He concedes that these studies would lead to some medical breakthroughs.
Still, they should not be done.

"There are other ways to advance medicine and human health besides going out
into the strange, brave new world of chimeric animals," Rifkin said, adding
that sophisticated computer models can substitute for experimentation on
live animals.

"One doesn't have to be religious or into animal rights to think this
doesn't make sense," he continued. "It's the scientists who want to do this.
They've now gone over the edge into the pathological domain."

David Magnus, director of the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics at
Stanford University, believes the real worry is whether or not chimeras will
be put to uses that are problematic, risky, or dangerous.

Human Born to Mice Parents?

For example, an experiment that would raise concerns, he said, is
genetically engineering mice to produce human sperm and eggs, then doing in
vitro fertilization to produce a child whose parents are a pair of mice.

"Most people would find that problematic," Magnus said, "but those uses are
bizarre and not, to the best of my knowledge, anything that anybody is
remotely contemplating. Most uses of chimeras are actually much more
relevant to practical concerns."

Last year Canada passed the Assisted Human Reproduction Act, which bans
chimeras. Specifically, it prohibits transferring a nonhuman cell into a
human embryo and putting human cells into a nonhuman embryo.

Cynthia Cohen is a member of Canada's Stem Cell Oversight Committee, which
oversees research protocols to ensure they are in accordance with the new
guidelines.

She believes a ban should also be put into place in the U.S.

Creating chimeras, she said, by mixing human and animal gametes (sperms and
eggs) or transferring reproductive cells, diminishes human dignity.

"It would deny that there is something distinctive and valuable about human
beings that ought to be honored and protected," said Cohen, who is also the
senior research fellow at Georgetown University's Kennedy Institute of
Ethics in Washington, D.C.

But, she noted, the wording on such a ban needs to be developed carefully.
It shouldn't outlaw ethical and legitimate experiments—such as transferring
a limited number of adult human stem cells into animal embryos in order to
learn how they proliferate and grow during the prenatal period.

Irv Weissman, director of Stanford University's Institute of Cancer/Stem
Cell Biology and Medicine in California, is against a ban in the United
States.

"Anybody who puts their own moral guidance in the way of this biomedical
science, where they want to impose their will—not just be part of an
argument—if that leads to a ban or moratorium. … they are stopping research
that would save human lives," he said.

Mice With Human Brains

Weissman has already created mice with brains that are about one percent
human.

Later this year he may conduct another experiment where the mice have 100
percent human brains. This would be done, he said, by injecting human
neurons into the brains of embryonic mice.

Before being born, the mice would be killed and dissected to see if the
architecture of a human brain had formed. If it did, he'd look for traces of
human cognitive behavior.

Weissman said he's not a mad scientist trying to create a human in an animal
body. He hopes the experiment leads to a better understanding of how the
brain works, which would be useful in treating diseases like Alzheimer's or
Parkinson's disease.

The test has not yet begun. Weissman is waiting to read the National
Academy's report, due out in March.

William Cheshire, associate professor of neurology at the Mayo Clinic's
Jacksonville, Florida, branch, feels that combining human and animal neurons
is problematic.

"This is unexplored biologic territory," he said. "Whatever moral threshold
of human neural development we might choose to set as the limit for such an
experiment, there would be a considerable risk of exceeding that limit
before it could be recognized."

Cheshire supports research that combines human and animal cells to study
cellular function. As an undergraduate he participated in research that
fused human and mouse cells.

But where he draws the ethical line is on research that would destroy a
human embryo to obtain cells, or research that would create an organism that
is partly human and partly animal.

"We must be cautious not to violate the integrity of humanity or of animal
life over which we have a stewardship responsibility," said Cheshire, a
member of Christian Medical and Dental Associations. "Research projects that
create human-animal chimeras risk disturbing fragile ecosystems, endanger
health, and affront species integrity."

Indonesian Tsunami Probably Tripped by Exxon-Mobil Works

Indonesian Tsunami Probably Tripped by Exxon-Mobil Works
Compiled by PESN from Paul Noel and JAH

One cubic mile of natural gas extracted every four years at epicenter Aceh
facility presents a smoking gun for man-made factor in 9.0 earthquake with
accompanying tsunami that killed more than 225,000 people. Think of a large
boulder sitting precariously, nudged over the edge with a small lever.

ACEH, INDONESIA -- Exxon-Mobil has a 60-billion-standard-cubic-foot-per-day
facility near Aceh. In the span of four years the company extracts more than
one cubic mile of natural gas from the formations beneath what has turned
out to be the epicenter of the Aceh earthquake. The gas field there has been
producing for much longer than four years, and is one of the largest such
facilities in the world.

Scientists have known for some time that earthquakes in the order of 4.0 on
the Richtor scale have been caused by oil drilling and other earth intrusive
practices.

Correlation of Increase in Major Earthquakes to Increse in Oil Combustion
from 1900 to 2000 (ForceBorne.com )
An analogous phenomena can be seen with earthquakes associated with large
Hydro Dams. For example, Fontana Dam (USTVA North Carolina) has been
associated with up to 4.0 earthquakes and routinely causes 2.5 quakes some
fifty-plus years after construction.

Due to its much greater scale, and the presence of six geological faults in
the area, the Three Gorges Dam in China will create very large earthquakes
if its reservoirs are ever filled completely. According to Chinese news
reports, tremors measuring 6.1 and 5.8 on the Richter scale hit the Zhangye
region at 8:41 p.m. and 8:48 p.m. on Oct. 25, 2003.

Water was drained to safe levels over the next two days, and the China Daily
reported that the dams were structurally compromised: "Cracks five
centimetres wide had opened in the walls of the Shuangshuzhi reservoir,
while the Zhaizhaizi reservoir had developed a fissure one centimetre wide
and 410 metres long", the newspaper reported.

The weight of water overlying an unstable geological formation or fault
exerts incredible pressure to which the rock layers inevitably yield.
Therefore it is legitimate to ask, "What role did the extraction of oil and
gas from the immediate area play in the 9.0 Aceh earthquake on Dec. 26, 2004?"

World oil production alone (not including natural gas) is approximately 80
to 100 million barrels of oil per day. That is a tremendous volume of oil,
too large to even visualize in your mind’s eye, which is being extracted
EVERY DAY.

The world’s oilfields are pressurized naturally by natural-gas within the
oil. We've all probably seen "oil gushers" on films involving oil discovery:
oil shoots high into the air as it is forced out of the ground by the
natural-gas pressure in the underground oilfield.

The oil is not only pressurized, but is also hot. As it is extracted, the
pressure gradually decreases until the oil well is no longer pressurized.
Comparable to an empty aerosol can that still has some liquid in it, but
which is no longer expelled by depressing the spout, the gas pressure
decreases to the point where the drilling company needs to burn energy for
pumping. Thus it becomes less profitable to extract the oil.

In some cases, in order to extract the remaining oil, cold water is
injected/pumped into the well, causing the oil to float on top of the
injected water. As the oil well fills with cold water, the last remaining
oil which floats up on top of it is forced up through the well head to the
surface, until the well is "dry" – i.e. "empty", but not literally "dry"
since it is now filled with water.

During these various stages of the oil-extraction process, the outer crust
of the globe is gradually being depressurized and cooled internally, causing
contraction for both of these reasons. When objects cool down they
automatically shrink/contract in size. If you let high-pressure air or gas
out of a cylinder ice forms around the outlet, and cools the entire
cylinder. If you let some of the air out of a football, or basketball, the
ball shrinks and goes badly out of shape.

Apply that to the Earth and you have earthquakes as the crustal layers shift
in response to the loss of pressure from below while the water pressure
above increases. This is simple common sense –- not rocket science. It is a
fact so simple that anyone who understands the oil-extraction process would
understand the effects. Or at least, they should understand.

Therefore, the people doing this oil extraction should know the risk of
triggering earthquakes, even if they ignore the consequences of rapidly
dropping the underground pressure -- as the financial gurus and oil
executives apparently regularly do.

Should these executives and decision-makers, who are also the profit-makers,
be required to accept liability for the consequences?

Another obvious fact that is never quoted in relation to global warming is
that internal combustion engines do not just give off greenhouse gases, they
also give off tremendous heat – every single one of them. If you try putting
your hand near the cooling-radiator or exhaust manifold of a running engine,
you are going to snatch it away again quickly to prevent burns. The
professors never factor this into the global-warming equations, and never
mention it in the news. They mention only the gas emissions.

Think about the millions of engines giving off tremendous heat every day,
some all day every day. Compound this on top of the greenhouse gases and you
can see why the scientists' and professors' prognostications have turned out
to be wrong. The ice caps are melting much faster than the "experts" first
predicted, and faster than they are still wrongly predicting now. What
pressures does this shift in weight from the poles place on the planet?

If oil is continually being created deep in the earth, as some theorists
argue, what happens when this new oil rises into a former oil deposit that
is now filled with water? Will this also result in further earthquakes as
pressure builds up with gas being forced into the same space?

To connect the dots, therefore, we have to link the rapid “harvesting” of
subterranean and undersea oil, and the reason for doing so – the thirsty
tanks of obsolete gas-guzzling vehicles – with the consequence of
earthquakes and tsunamis. Not only in Asia, but also around the world, are
many oilfields with rapidly dropping pressure, into which water is being
pumped to extract the last expensive barrels. How many more disastrous
quakes will humanity face as the result of this artificially-maintained
appetite for fuel?

Ghostbusters and seekers trek to Centre Hill's haunted grounds

The tour had community members on the lookout for evidence of music
mysteriously playing, sheets being torn off beds and soldiers running
through rooms.

PETERSBURG - Some came because they thought it would be a good family event.

Others came because they've been coming since the first one and each time
hope for a surprise.

Still others came because they "felt" they should.

The Ghost Watch at Centre Hill Mansion has been an ever popular way to spend
a frigid late January evening. This year more than 200 people came out to
the event, so many that the tours which were supposed to have a maximum of
15 people, were having up to 20 at a time.

"You just never know what you're going to see on this tour," said Ted Lowder
who has been coming on the tours since the first one. "I keep hoping to be
surprised one year."

The Ghost Watch first began in 1991 when more than 500 people came out to
the first tour. Since then reservations have been mandatory. More than 100
years ago the residents of Centre Hill Mansion, one of the city's most
historic homes, first reported hearing the footsteps of soldiers.

For years the ghostly noises occurred on Jan. 24. Now, more than 100 years
since the sounds were first reported, tours are held each Jan. 24 to see if
the sounds will once again be heard.

Sandi Bosha and several of her friends decided to go on the tour after one
of them felt the presence of "the lady in the window." One of the many ghost
stories surrounding the house is that there is a beautiful lady in white
that can be seen looking out over the circle on Centre Hill Court.

One of the tools of Bosha's self-described obsession of ghost hunting is a
standard compass. She explained that any specific movement indicates a
change in the electromagnetic field, and possibly the presence of something
not of this realm of existence.

"I found several places in the house where the needle of the compass
specifically moved," said Bosha.

Two places she said she could detect the movement the most were near the
crib on the second floor and in a back bedroom.

Bosha said she would love to come back and tour the home again in daylight
hours.

One of her friends who came out with her for the tour, Jan Hartman, said she
happened to tour the place once, and drove by the house and felt immediate
connections and presences both times.

"I definitely felt something in the room with the cradle," Hartman said. "I
feel there's a woman here for a child and that she won't leave because she's
looking for that child."

Centre Hill site coordinator Ann Brown said in all the years she has worked
at the house, she has never heard anything and that she has even conducted
the tours each year for the annual Ghost Watch.

Other ghostly tales associated with the house, according to Brown, include
feelings of being watched, doors which have been opened inexplicably and a
beautiful woman overlooking Centre Hill Court. Despite all the tales of
apparitions and otherworldly sounds, Brown has still not seen or heard a
ghost. But she isn't ruling out the possibility.

Neither is Sydney Knapp, one of the tour guides for the event Monday. She
said that in the four years she has conducted the tour, she hasn't seen
anything.

"But we always tell them good morning when we open and good evening when we
close," said Knapp. "We have a great deal of respect for the ghosts."

Re: Mysterious Noise Pollution Is Known As The Hum

This message was sent from: Paranormal.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Larry,
I have lived in DeSoto, Texas since 1978 in the same house. The Hum
seems to have started for me in the early nineties. Since I never could
identify the source of the noise, and no one else in the family could hear
it but me, I just tried to live with it. I'm sure the constant droning hum
noise have had effects on my physical and psychological health. I have
tried earplugs (didn't work), putting the pillow over my head, just about
everything, including sleep-aids. I even remember wishing I was actually
deaf!! Anyway, right now, and for a good year or so, I haven't heard the
hum. I wish I had seen that show on CNN about the hum that you mentioned.
Hope you are "humless", Cindy

A fish that has a pattern resembling a human face on its body was found in a
pond in Chongju, South Korea, according to a Local 6 News report.

The news of a fish with a human face spread to South Korea through the
Internet after a Japanese sports tabloid reported on the unusual fish.

A South Korean newspaper then carried an article about the fish in South
Korea.

The fish is the result of artificial insemination between a carp and ayu
sweetfish.

As the fish grew larger, the design on the fish reportedly changed to look
more like the face of a human being.

Rare markings on a fish are considered a good omen in some Asian countries,
according to a report.

Re: Strange Object Seen in Sky Across Fort Wayne

This message was sent from: Unidentified Flying Objects.

----------------------------------------------------------------

My husband and I plus a friend were driving on that day in Indiana on I-74
West and took approximately 15 photos of 6 different objects in the sky
which for the most part were just hovering. We then witnessed airforce
craft flying with haste to their position and from what we could tell one
was shot down. There were approximately 4 airforce craft on intercept.
There was a plume of smoke after one plumeted and hit the ground. Even some
truckers were honking their horns on the motorway as if to alert people to
the sight.

We took photos of all that I've mentioned above yet CVS pharmacy at Avon say
they don't know what happened to our film. Our pictures were very clear and
I guess someone just wanted to sell them. We've called and been in numerous
times and they always say 'we'll call you back' and they never do. We've
been in and the lady who ALWAYS serves us when we put a film in said she
didn't ever recognise us which is just ridiculous. If anyone can help with
our cause we'd greatly appreciate it. We have the original dockets from
when we put the film in but will not hand them over to the staff as they
seem to be totally incompetant or just plain hiding the fact they took that
roll of film. We aren't looking to make money from these photos whatsoever
it's something we want to share over the net...it's more confirmation that
on that day there were UFO's over Indiana.

Any suggestions?
Cly

Drug traffickers apparently own US debt

This message was sent from: Conspiracy / ParaPolitics.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Drug traffickers apparently own US debt: Former ABC reporterJon Rappaport at
:

"Major Foreign Holders of Treasury Securities" ... a US Treasury Dept. page.

... It indicates that $85 billion of the US debt was bought, in the form of
purchased US government paper (bonds, securities, etc.), by "Caribbean Bank
Centers." There is a 2 after that entry. I thought the 2 referred to two
bank centers, but it's a footnote. The footnote spells out where these
Caribbean bank centers are located:

Bahamas, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Netherlands Antilles, Panama.

Places that have gathered fame as friends to laundered $$$.

Is this a coincidence? I would bet against that. I would say that bank
centers in these places (notice that the exact banks are not named) have
taken in very large amounts of drug money and then invested some of that
money in US government paper---which is how the US finances its debt.

I mean, if you were the head of the DEA or the FBI and you were honest, and
you found out that $85 billion of the US government debt was being
bankrolled from such places, wouldn't you smell a rat? Wouldn't you
investigate? The operative word here is HONEST.

The absence of such investigations, in the real world, is what you can call
a clue. A clue that the war on drugs is, at best, a very limited and phony
enterprise, designed (in part) to protect a favored source of revenue for
the US government. Such protection involves, among other things, terminating
major, major drug busts before they happen. A necessity, if those big $$$
are going to be successfully fielded by drug traffickers, deposited in "bank
centers," and then invested in floating part of the US government debt.

A criminal operation of this kind and magnitude is obviously going to
involve SKIMMING. By that I suggest that certain US government officials and
certain other insiders are going to grab a significant commission along the
way.

In fact, what we are looking at here is a DEAL, a TRADE-OFF. The traffickers
are permitted to go about their business, with the understanding that they
will buy up a piece of the US national debt.

As a partial analogy, the US Treasury document I'm referring to also
ominously lists China as a very major holder of US government debt. Well,
where does the government of China get the money to buy its piece of the US
deficit? Let's see. There is slave labor or close-to-slave-labor in
factories that turn out products that are sold to US companies. Does the US
government entertain a flicker of conscience about that ugly situation? Of
course not. In the same way, the US government does not mind at all that
billions of its debt are bought by drug traffickers. It's just business.
It's just money.

By: U.S. Pacific Fleet Public Affairs Office

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii -- A crewmember died this afternoon aboard the Los
Angeles-class submarine USS San Francisco (SSN 711) as a result of injuries
sustained when the sub ran aground yesterday south of Guam.

The name of the Sailor is being withheld pending a mandatory 24-hour period,
which started when next of kin were notified.

Our sincerest condolences and prayers go out to the family and friends of
the Sailor.

at the first opportunity this morning, but the one Sailor’s injuries were
extremely serious. The medical personnel, including a doctor, remain aboard
and are treating 23 other crew members for a range of injuries including

The submarine remains on the surface and is continuing toward its homeport
in Guam, escorted by the Coast Guard cutter Galveston Island and USNS
